Carry On, Mr. Bowditch by Jean Lee Latham

This is a biography, yes a biography, of a real New England sailor and it’s a beautiful read! Nathaniel Bowditch is a son of a New England family with too many children to care for and feed. Thus begins Nathaniel’s journey to become one of the greatest seaman ever. In spite of a challenging beginning in life, Nat’s sheer mathematical brilliance sets the stage for many maritime discoveries that change naval navigation forever.

Every young boy who has ever felt inadequate should read this book or have it read to him. This book is brilliantly written.

The Bronze Bow by Elizabeth George Speare

Set in Jerusalem during the time of Christ, this book is about a young boy named Daniel who is single-minded in his one-and-only mission – to avenge the death of his father who has been killed by Roman soldiers. The only thing that distracts Daniel from this quest is the death of his grandmother and the need to care for his younger sister. Even caring for his younger sister doesn’t deter him for very long. He continues his plot to extract revenge and leads his band of rebels toward that goal.

In the midst of all of his anger, bitterness, and resentment, Daniel finds himself inexplicably drawn to the teachings of a little-known rabbi. The rabbi teaches love instead of hatred, and forgiveness instead of resentment. The news of his teachings spreads throughout the land, but Daniel finds it difficult to fully embrace the teachings of a man he has never met. Then one life-altering day, Daniel comes face to face with Jesus Christ, and his life is forever changed.
The course of Daniel’s life changes as does the storyline of the book.

My daughter and I both absolutely loved this book! Initially, it’s a little difficult to get into, but once you do, it is such a good read. This book should be on everyone’s must-read list!
